Support Groups in North Carolina Listed by
County
Blessed is the influence
of one true, loving human soul on another.
— George
Eliot
Throughout our state there
are many support groups and organizations
which offer support services for breast cancer
patients, survivors, family members, friends
and caregivers. Whether you choose to attend
a support group is your decision. You may
take comfort in knowing that people who care
are ready to share their time, experiences,
empathy and compassion with you.
Unless otherwise
noted, support groups are free of charge.
Support groups offer women and men with
breast cancer, their families, friends and
children the opportunity to meet others with
similar experiences and share information
about the disease and practical ways to cope.
We
have gathered information about the following
types of support groups across the state.
These groups are organized by county.
- breast
cancer
- African American
- women’s
cancer
- cancer
- lymphedema
- metastatic cancer
- family/caregivers
- children’s
groups
- grief recovery
- cancer camps
(for people with cancer or for children
whose parents have cancer)
Although we have made every
effort to find support groups in North Carolina,
we cannot guarantee that this list
is complete.
TIPS FOR FINDING A SUPPORT GROUP
- Check the
following county-by-county listings in
this chapter. If you find a group, make
sure to call the contact number to verify
the day, time and meeting location of
the group as these are subject to change.
- Check
with your local hospital or cancer center.
New groups start all the time, and
some groups (like Look Good . . . Feel
Better) take place every few months. In
addition, you might find that your hospital
or cancer center has wellness activities
such as yoga, exercise, nutrition or
art therapy.
- Check with
your local American Cancer Society
office (in phone book) or call 800.ACS.2345
(for hearing impaired, 866.228.4327). They
sometimes sponsor groups such as Reach
to Recovery, and Look Good . . . Feel Better
several times throughout the year, usually
at a local hospital or cancer center.
- If
you have a cancer support organization
in your area (such as Buddy Kemp Caring
House in Charlotte, Cancer Services,
Inc. in Winston-Salem, or Cornucopia House
Cancer Support Center in Chapel Hill),
check with them to see if they have a support
group for you or other activities you may
be interested in.
